1. Clearly Fun™ PVC Food & Toy Foraging Tubes
Foot Toys
Prices: $12.95 to $31.95
  • Easy to clean & refill.    
    • Wash in a dishwasher (silverware basket and air dry) or wash by hand.
    • Caps are removable (by people and some birds).  To make the cap extra tight, place a small piece of paper under the cap.
    • The foot toy style comes with a short plastic rope hanger (see 4th photo).  It can also be hung on the
      EH Chewable Hangers (skewers).

  • Toy Styles - your choice of 3 styles 
    • Foot toy with removable Paulie Rope hanger
    • Hanging toy - hardware is all stainless steel (chain & O-rings)
    • Cage mount - with stainless steel (bolt and wing nut) and two acrylic washers.
  • Hole size in toys: ¼" to 1" make birds work to get the food or treats.  Each tube has three holes.  Nut tubes have one hole.
  • PVC sizes (½", ¾", 1" and 1½") are the inside diameter (width) of the pipe
    • How large?  What fits inside?
      • ½" -- pistachio nuts, shelled peanuts, and seeds
      • ¾" -- average peanut in shell, small almond in shell*
        * If the almond is too big, break off the edge of the shell with pliers.
      • 1" -- large almonds, Brazil nuts
      • 1½" -- bigger items

How to select the right size and style for your bird:

  1. SELECT SIZE.  What do you want to put in the tube?  See the list above.
  2. SELECT STYLE: foot, hanging, or cage-mount.  
    1. DIFFICULTY.  The foot toy is more challenging than the hanging or cage mounted style.
    2. BIRD SIZE.  
      1. Small Birds (smaller than Amazon/grey).  Get the ½" or ¾" size and use with a plastic rope hanger or the hanging or cage mount style. 
      2. Medium Birds (Amazon/grey) can hold the two smaller ½" or ¾" sizes in their foot and can use any size that is hung or cage mounted.
      3. Large Birds (large macaw and cockatoo) can use any size. 
        We recommend  1" or         1½" sizes.

        NOTE: We tested  the ½" size with several large macaws and cockatoos.  They scratched the PVC but none of the birds broke the tubes.

Not sure what to get?  Get a ½" or ¾" foot toy
style and see how your bird likes it.

How to use PVC toy:
Remove white end cap and insert food or toys. Replace cap. Bird works through the small holes
in the clear PVC tube to get the item. 

Add a paper ball (wadded up paper) in each end
of the tube to hold the food near the holes to
make it easier to get.

CORRECTION -- FEATURED TOY:  The Clearly Fun PVC Foraging Toy was featured in Companion Parrot Quarterly (Spring 2005, Issue #68).  There were errors in the toy review (page 80). 

  • SIZE SELECTION: The reviewer wished the toy was available in larger sizes.  At the time of the review, the toy was available in five sizes, ½" through 2".  (We recently discontinued the 2" size.)  The ½" and ¾" sizes that were reviewed are the smaller sizes.  We currently also have 1" and 1½" sizes.  There is a section on the web page that explains what size to choose for your bird.

  • DURABILITY:  The reviewer described the toy as a "semi-destroyable" toy for a larger bird.  She was concerned that her Moluccan cockatoo would break the toy.  

    • We tested the smallest size (½") with full-sized cockatoos (umbrella and Moluccan) and full-sized macaws (blue & gold, scarlet, and green wing).  None of the birds broke the very smallest toy.  They could only scratch the plastic.  

    • We don't recommend the smallest (½"and ¾") sizes for large birds because it's hard for them to get the tip of their big beaks in the holes.  The 1" or 1½" sizes are fine for large birds.
